“All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt.” Susan Sontag
A great photo!

So true. We realize it when looking at old photos, especially of our youth. Time marches on leaving the world of the photo behind. It’s wonderful we have the technology to capture those moments so we can savor them years, decades later. Great post.

Thanks, the idea of time is confusing, is there really such a thing?

Thanks Jackie. Since time is basically an illusion I think I’d agree.

Thanks Cee, its unusual for the station to be this empty but at least Joel was on the job.

Excellent leading lines and Joel posed so well for your shot. Did you ask him or did you zoom in while he wasn’t looking?

Thanks Shelley and a very good question. At first I zoomed in and took a few shots but realized I needed to use my better camera. It has a prime lens so I had to get close. He was more than happy to oblige and pulled out his pocket watch for this pose. I think he would have done a cartwheel if I asked him he was so into it.

That’s awesome! I’m not to the point of being brave enough to ask for strangers to pose for photos. You chose the right lens – the photo is stunning! A cartwheel photo, though, might have been quite a different view to capture!?

Thanks again Shelley. I asked him not to look at the camera and he said fine. Others ask why and then it gets complicated. He probably would have ruined his hat with a cartwheel so I got him in his natural state.

I think the goal is to be comfortable with our discomfort. Having an obsessive personality pushes me to do things that I normally wouldn’t do, which in itself is a little confusing and at the same time fascinating.

You’re very wise to do so. I need to push myself out of my comfort zone more often! Way to encourage others to do so.

Its not that I consciously want to but part of me is always screaming: Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead (not literally). So its an everyday fight between one I and another I. Then there is a different I who says the whole thing is an illusion but we don’t believe him.

I wish I had profound words to reply – while I can’t sympathize, I can empathize with how hard you have to work with each battle. Congratulations on each moment you work through.

Stunning. He looks so engrossed in what he is doing that it is hard to think of it as a posed photo.

Its one of the most popular train stations in Pennsylvania so I think he’s had a lot of practice. 🙂
